Promotion of Performative Utterances in In Our Time - Literature Essay Samples

Words are important. But, as is commonly said, ‘actions speak louder than words.’ In speech-act theory, there are two types of utterances, constative and performative. Constative utterances can be identified as true or false. Performative utterances perform some action through the act of being spoken, or as John J. Austin writes, â€Å"to state that I am doing it: it is to do it† (Austin, 6). If actions do hold more influence than speech, speech-action would be the most influential type of speech. This is why, in Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time, Nick is shaped by the performative utterances of authority figures more than he is shaped by constative utterances. In order to show the utility of performative utterances and how they are promoted in the English language over constative utterances, a close reading is required. The performative utterances of Nick’s father in â€Å"The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife† influence Nick for the book’s entirety. At the end of the story, Dick, Nicks father, leaves the house and his wife for a walk. His wife asks him to send Nick inside to speak with her. He does not. The dialogue, â€Å"All right. Come on, then† (Hemingway, 76) is a performative utterance, one that grants permission with its usage. And, with its usage, Nick learns that it is acceptable to retreat from human interaction and connection, especially in favor of nature and the outdoors. Readers can gather from Dick’s character and behavior that this utterance is not an anomaly, that performative utterances highlighting the acceptability of isolating oneself in nature are frequent in Nicks childhood. This type of utterance becomes a part of Nick’s identity, as is evident in the next story, â€Å"The End of Something.† It is fitting that this story fol lows immediately. The stories’ order underlines the connection between Dick’s performative utterance and his sons isolation from people in favor of nature. In this narrative, Nick goes on a camping trip with his girlfriend and a close friend. Following his father’s lesson, Nick isolates himself from both. â€Å"Isn’t love any fun?† asks Marjorie. And Nick replies â€Å"no† (Hemingway 81). With this, their relationship ends and Nick seems to be left alone with nature. This is where readers first see Nick isolate himself according to his father’s teaching through the influence of performative utterance. But Nick is not alone. Again, the part of his identity that prefers nature to man is evident: â€Å"Oh, go away, Bill! Go away for a while.† And with that, Nick is finally alone with nature. This preference for nature over people is shown in Big Two-Hearted River as well. The phrase The coffee according to Hopkins suggests that Ni ck does have a longing for human interaction. But due to his father’s performative language, and to how that language has rooted itself in Nick’s identity, he chose to go on the trip alone. Going backward to â€Å"Indian Camp† can show that constative utterances, even seemingly important ones, hold less influence on the forming of identity than performative utterances. In example, the dialogue exchange at the end of â€Å"Indian Camp,† which only contains constative utterances and seems to be a formative experience for Nick, holds no influence over him. Though his father tries to reassure him about the nature of death (with utterances that could be identified as true or false), Nick denies the notion of his own death. A lesson opposite the intended one is learned because of the usage of constative utterances and the demotion of constative utterances in the English language. Not only do they appear to hold less influence than performative utterances on the formation of an identity, but they may also have the reverse effect. Whereas performative utterances influence along the lines of the utterance (Nick is given permission through speech and he applies that permission to his identity), a constative utterance from authority figure may cause an identity to absorb an antithetical lesson (Dick states that death is easy and Nick feels he won’t die) (Hemingway 70). Jonathan Culler puts the promotive quality of performative language a different way: â€Å"performative language is†¦ bringing things into being, organizing the world rather than simply representing what it is† (Culler 101-102). Culler is saying that performative utterances shape the world around us, including identities within that world. One reason that performative utterances might be more influential than constative utterances is that they cannot be false. Perhaps the possibility or suspicion of falsehood could drive one away from a lesson taught through constative utterances. Performative utterances cannot be false since they themselves constitute the sole authority on that utterance. So, when Dick utters â€Å"alright,† he grants permission and at the same time makes the utterance the only evidence as to whether Dick grants permission or not, since it created the permission. In cases like this, a performative utterance commits the specified action of the utte rance and confirms the utterance itself. This factor increases the utterances ethos by making it more reliable, thus causing the subject, in this case Nick, to absorb the lesson. Works Cited Austin, J. L. How to Do Things with Words. Quarter Wit, Quarter Wisdom Beware of Sneaky Answer Choices on the GMAT!

Test-takers often ask for tips and short cuts to cut down the amount of work necessary to solve a GMAT problem.  As such, the Testmaker might want to award the test-taker who pays attention to detail and puts in the required effort. Today, we will look at an example of this concept if it seems to be too easy, it is a trap! In the figure given above, the area of the equilateral triangle is 48. If the other three figures are squares, what is the perimeter, approximately, of the nine-sided shape they form? (A) 8√(2) (B) 24√(3) (C) 72√(2) (D) 144√(2) (E) 384 The first thing I notice about  this question is that we have an  equilateral triangle. So I am thinking, the area = s^2 * √(3)/4 and/or the altitude = s*√(3)/2. The irrational number in play is √(3). There is only one  answer choice with √(3) in it, so will this be the answer? Now, it actually makes me uncomfortable that   there is only one option with √(3). At first glance, it seems that the answer has been served to us on a silver plate. But the question format doesn’t seem very easy it links two geometrical figures together. So I doubt very much that the correct answer would be that obvious. The next step will  be to think a bit harder: The area of the triangle has √(3) in it, so the side would be a further square root of √(3). This means the actual irrational number would be the fourth root of 3, but we don’t have any answer choice that has the fourth root of 3 in it. Let’s go deeper now and actually solve the question. The area of the equilateral triangle = Side^2 * (√(3)/4) = 48 Side^2 = 48*4/√(3) Side^2 = 4*4*4*3/√(3) Side = 8*FourthRoot(3) Now note that the side of the equilateral triangle is the same length as the sides of the squares, too. Hence, all sides of the three squares will be of length 8*FourthRoot(3). All nine sides of the figure are the sides of squares. Hence: The perimeter of the nine sided figure = 9*8*FourthRoot(3) The perimeter of the nine sided figure =72*FourthRoot(3) Now look at the answer choices. We have an option that is  72√(2). The other answer choices  are either much smaller or much greater than that. Think about it   the fourth root of 3 = √(√(3)) = √(1.732), which is actually very similar to √(2). Number properties will help you figure this out. Squares of smaller numbers (that are still greater than 1) are only a bit larger than the numbers themselves. For example: (1.1)^2 = 1.21 (1.2)^2 = 1.44 (1.3)^2 = 1.69 (1.414)^2 = 2 Since 1.732 is close to 1.69, the √(1.732) will be close to the √(1.69), i.e. 1.3. Also, √(2) = 1.414. The two values are quite close, therefore, the perimeter is approximately 72√(2). This is the reason the question specifically requests the  Ã¢â‚¬Å"approximate† perimeter. Course of Study for 6th Grade

Sixth grade is an eagerly-anticipated time of transition for most tweens. The middle school years can be both exciting and challenging. Sixth, 7th, and 8th-grades often mean higher expectations and more responsibility for students academically. They can also be emotionally-challenging years as students reach adolescence. Language Arts A typical course of study in language arts for sixth grade includes components of reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Students will read a variety of genres including fiction and non-fiction; biographies; poetry; and plays. They will also read more complex texts across the curriculum in subjects such as science and social studies.   Sixth-graders will learn to use techniques such as to cause and effect or compare and contrast  to analyze the plot, characters, and central theme of a  text. Writing shifts to more complex compositions regarding the content and length of time spent on assignments. Students may write long-term research papers or spend a week or more developing a more elaborate narrative. Writing assignments should also include expository and persuasive essays,  autobiographies, and letters. As more proficient writers, sixth-graders will learn to vary their sentence structure for more expressive writing and avoid using a passive voice.  They will use  tools such as a thesaurus to include more varied and descriptive vocabulary. Grammar also becomes more complex and should cover, identifying parts of speech such as direct and indirect objects; predicate adjective; and transitive and intransitive verbs. Students will begin to learn Greek and Latin roots to help them analyze and understand unfamiliar vocabulary.   Math Sixth-grade students have a solid grasp of foundational math skills and are ready to move on to more complex concepts and computations.   A typical course of study for 6th-grade math includes working with negative and rational numbers; ratios, proportion, and percent; reading, writing, and solving  equations with variables; and using the order of operations to solve problems. Students are introduced to statistical thinking using  mean, median, variability, and range. Geometry topics include finding the area, volume, and surface area of polygons such as triangles and quadrilaterals; and determining the diameter, radius, and  circumference of circles. Science In sixth grade, students continue to use the scientific method to increase their understanding of earth, physical, and life science topics.   Life science topics include the classification of living things; the human body; cell structure and function; sexual and asexual reproduction; genetics; microbes, algae, and fungi; and plant reproduction.   Physical science covers concepts such as sound, light, and heat; elements and compounds; electricity and its uses; electric and magnetic interaction; potential and kinetic energy; simple machines; inventions; and nuclear power. Earth science may cover topics such as climate and  weather; conservation;  space  and the universe; oceans, geology; and recycling. Social Studies The topics covered in social studies can vary widely in 6th grade, particularly with homeschooling families based on the curriculum they use and their homeschooling style. History topics may include ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Some students may be covering the Middle Ages or Renaissance.   Other common topics for sixth grade include the U.S. government and Constitution; the presidential election process; types of governments; the Industrial Revolution;  and the rise of the United States as a political power. Geography often covers a detailed study of various regions or cultures, including the history, foods, customs; and religion of the area.   Art There is no typical  course of study for art in middle school. Instead, the general guideline is to allow students to experiment with a variety of art forms to discover what interests them. Students may enjoy performance arts such as drama or playing a musical instrument. Others may prefer visual arts such as painting, drawing, or photography. Textile arts, such as sewing, weaving, or knitting, may appeal to some 6th graders.  Ã‚   The study of art can also include art history or the study of famous artists or composers and their work. Technology Technology plays a huge role in modern society. By middle school, most students will have already had a great deal of experience with technology. However, sixth grade is an excellent time to make sure that students are proficient in areas of technology that they will use throughout high school. Students should be competent in their keyboarding skills. They should be familiar with common applications such as those used to produce text documents and spreadsheets.   Students must also understand and follow safety guidelines when using the internet and know how to adhere to fair use rules and obey copyright laws.

Propositions in Debate Definition and Examples

In an argument or debate, a proposition is a statement that affirms or denies something. As explained below, a proposition may function as a premise or a conclusion in a syllogism or enthymeme. In formal debates, a proposition may also be called a topic, motion, or resolution. EtymologyFrom the Latin, to set forth Examples and Observations An argument is any group of propositions where one proposition is claimed to follow from the others, and where the others are treated as furnishing grounds or support for the truth of the one. An argument is not a mere collection of propositions, but a group with a particular, rather formal, structure. . . . The conclusion of an argument is the one proposition that is arrived at and affirmed on the basis of the other propositions of the argument. The premises of an argument are the other propositions which are assumed or otherwise accepted as providing support or justification for accepting the one proposition which is the conclusion. Thus, in the three propositions that follow in the universal deductive categorical syllogism, the first two are premises and the third the conclusion: All men are mortal.​Socrates is a man.Socrates is mortal. . . . This means that a good thesis is crucial to your essay. For argumentative or persuasive essays, the thesis is sometimes called a major proposition, or a claim. Through your major proposition, you take a definite position in a debate, and by taking a strong position, you give your essay its argumentative edge. Your readers must know what your position is and must see that you have supported your main idea with convincing minor points. (Gilbert H. Muller and Harvey S. Wiener, The Short Prose Reader, 12th ed. McGraw-Hill, 2009) Propositions in Debates Debate is the process of presenting arguments for or against a proposition. Propositions for which people argue are controversial and have one or more individuals presenting the case for the proposition while others present the case against it. Every debater is an advocate; the purpose of each speaker is to gain the belief of the audience for his side. Argument is the core of the debate speech—the superior debater must be superior in the use of argument. The chief means of persuasion in debate is the logical mode. (Robert B. International Debate Education Association, 2006) Clarifying Propositions [It often requires] some work to extract a clear representation of an argument from any given prose passage. First of all, it is possible to express a proposition using any kind of grammatical construction. Interrogative, optative, or exclamatory sentences, for example, can, with appropriate contextual stage setting, be used to express propositions. In the interests of clarity, therefore, it will often be helpful to paraphrase an authors words, in expressing a premise or conclusion, into the form of a declarative sentence that transparently expresses a proposition. Second, not every proposition expressed in an argumentative prose passage occurs within that passage as either a premise or a conclusion, or as (a proper) part of a premise or conclusion. Well refer to these propositions, which are neither identical with nor embedded in any premise or conclusion, and to the sentences by which they are expressed, as noise. Answer: Requirements of Remote Administration Remote administration is a technique through which one can accomplish a secured view of a remote computer. Due to the advancement in the technology, the technology can be benefited to anyone who composes some basic requirements. There are some specific system requirements for the remote connection to be established and they are as follows:- Any system which has an internet connection or LAN (local area network) connection can be administered remotely. Server software has to be installed by the user on his system for secure remote administration. Thus, the user can enjoy the services remotely through any device or system. The internet connection of the user should be proper and not dial up in nature, as it constantly gets disconnected. After the establishment of the connection, the desktop screen of the host is visible to the client. Other than these, certain hardware requirements such as an adequate Ram, hard disk, and operating system to support the software are mandatory as well. Requirements of Resource Management Resource management is essential in a system created or developed by human beings. It directly affects the three fundamental properties of a system which are cost, functionality and performance. The scarcity of resources has an adverse effect on the performance and cost of a service. It can also have an indirect impact on the functionality of the service and inefficiency may make the functions of the system more expensive or ineffective. In the context of cloud computing, the resources are shared and moreover, the cloud being a complex system, it is very much necessary to optimize the use of resources in the cloud environment (Manageengine.com, 2016). The nature of cloud results into the unexpected call for resources and the requests can be beyond controls depending on the factors. So, it is considered that the cloud resource management needs complex policies for maximum optimization of resources. The main components for the resource management are cloud providers and clients. VMM (virtual machine monitor) and VIM (Virtualization Improved) are the core components of resource management (Cloudpatterns.org, 2016). Service Level Agreement (SLA) A contract between the two entities: service providers and clients which describe the terms and conditions of the services provided by the provider are called service level agreement. The service provider mentions the list of services to be provided by him and the penalties provider would pay if he is not able to meet the commitments. The SLA acts as a metrics for the service provider to judge its capabilities to deliver the performance. There are some specifications in SLA which are called as service level specifications. There are generally some parameters which are directly related to service such as throughput, latency, availability of network and so on. They describe the quality of service. Real-time reporting on the factors such as QoS (quality of service), administration, agreement violations, and usage is very much essential in SLA(Cloudpatterns.org, 2016). Every application in cloud services should have high availability or resilience features and the requirements. The chosen service provider in this context is Amazon web services. Amazon web services (AWS) provides support to the clients to meet the needs of application resilience in a cost effective manner. An impactful high resilience strategy includes the use of multiple zones for availability, auto scaling, recovery up to certain extent, and continuous monitoring. The applications should ensure that the point of failures should be notified and assess the failures based on the needs of software and risk profile. In AWS, the resilience feature will not only include the recovery of a component but also the nature of resilience test which is to be performed while recovering the component. Some of the features of AWS are such as auto scaling, elastic IP address for the remapping of static IP addresses, load balancing across different availability zones and so on(Amazon, 2016). Application disaster recovery and Backup There are specific requirements for backup and disaster recovery for applications and they are specifically bound to a recovery time and a recovery point (Whatiscloud.com, 2016). It also has particular geographic requirements which can be helpful at the time of recovery as the proximity between the actual site and the recovery site can be calculated.(Tech Target, 2016) An effective strategy for disaster recovery will include more than how a component can be recovered. For an example, it can be said that a component failed in a region can be re-launched at a different region automatically using warm, hot or cold stand bys. There are tests which are needed to be performed for the disaster recovery as the recovery of an application should be confirmed.(Soeldner, 2016) At a certain level, an impactful disaster recovery and backup strategy needs to enrol and it would include global management of traffic (balancing of load), monitoring, recovery from region to region, and redundancy(Tech Target, 2016). There are certain techniques which are followed by the chosen provider AWS and they are as follows: - It can store machine images, data, or can initiate additional instances in a different AWS location. Amazon Route 53 is used when DNS of a particular region has failed. Archive data is stored in Amazon glacier.(Onlinetech.com, 2016)(Sheilapantry.com, 2016) It also provides leverages to database log shipping which is a kind of data replication technique and it is asynchronous in nature. It also keeps reserves of disaster recovery in different region with the help of reserved instance feature of Amazon EC2. Amazon machine images or EBS snapshot copy can be used. Amazon S3 can be used for more security and protection of data. EBS snapshot copy can be used for quick disaster recovery(Sherwood, 2015). SLA is originated by the network service provider, but it is now used by the cloud computing service providers and telecommunication service providers. SLA measures the quality of the service provider's performance using number of ways. Some of the specific metrics used in the SLA are: Service provided to the number of concurrent users. Application Response Time. Response time of Help Desk for different classes of problems. Availability of the service at the percentages of time. Availability of the Usage Statics. Comparison of periodic performances with the benchmarks of specific performances. To understand the various differences in the SLA and service and deployment model, the following guidelines models, such as laas, Saas or Pass. Apart from it, the models whose performances are also similar with the laas, saas or pass are Hybrid, Private (on-site) or Public models. Further, the crucial performance objectives are identified as: To get an insight into the business level performances objectives for the cloud opportunities such as reduction of cost, market the software functionality on per unit basis. Identification of the set of metrics, critical for the achievement of the business level performances objectives. It must be ensured that the continuous monitoring of the metrics of right level of granularity should be monitored in a cost-effective manner. To provide the consistency for the cloud metrics, majorly in the areas such as methods of collection, metrics definition, it is necessary to identify the standards properly. To influence the decisions of the business, metrics should be analysed and leveraged on the ongoing basis as a tool(Rouse, 2016). To evaluate the privacy requirements and security deeply, it must be ensured that the following questions should be answered: If the asset will be availed or distributed publically, how would the business will get harmed? If the assessment of the assets is made by one of our cloud providers than how would the business get harmed? If the functions or processes were manipulated by an outsider, then how the business will get harmed? If the processes will fail to recover the expected results, then how the business will get harmed? If there is an unexpected change in the information/data, then how would the business get harmed? If the availability of the assets will get missed for a period of time, then how the business will be harmed? While making selection of the SLA, the following guidelines must be followed by the users: Make a choice for the measurement which will motivate the right behaviour: The first goal of the service provider is to choose the metrics which will serve with the appropriate behaviour on behalf of the service providers and client. Each side of the business must attempt to provide satisfactory results in order to meet the objectives of the performances(Rouse, 2016). Be assuring about the metrics that it should reflect the factors within the control of service provider: SLA metrics should reflect the factors within the control of the outsourcer for motivating the right behaviour. A typical mistake which is commonly committed is to penalize the service provider for the delay's created due to lack of performances of the client's (Paul, 2008). Choose measurements that are easily collected and balance the power of desired metrics: Ideally, the SLA metrics can be easily collected but in a ground of minimal overhead, it may not be possible for all desired metrics. Less is more: The choice of an excessive number of metrics or metrics that produces voluminous data must be avoided. Setting of proper baseline: Defining the right metrics is just like winning half of the battle. In order to make it useful, the setting of metrics should be made according to the reasonable and attainable performances. The assessment discusses the aspects of cloud services such as remote administration, its role and importance, management of resources and service level agreements. It also discusses the management of service level agreement and its importance in the service contract with the client. The assessment at the beginning starts with the discussion of remote administration and the requirements needed in a system for a successful remote administration. It also discusses the advantages of remote connection and administration in cloud service(Ikediashi, 2004). Further, in the assessment, the idea of resource management is discussed in wide scale. As resource management is very critical in cloud computing (because of shared resources and uncertain demand of resources from the user), it is very much important to monitor the availability of the resources and have an optimized solution for the resource management and provide resources to the users as per their needs. Further, the areas of impact o f resource management are focused and it again certifies the importance of resources in cloud management and how it affects the performance, functioning and quality of clouds. Moreover, it also discusses the role of virtualization in resource management(Gsoedl, 2016). The assessment also provides an insight to the definition and importance of service level agreements and its management in the cloud computing industry. Service level agreements are very much essential and an important part of the client-server contract. The quality of service depends on service level agreements as it works as a metrics for the cloud consumers to judge the services of cloud providers. It also carries the agreement to penalize the providers, if the services according to the contract are not met (Golden, 2013; Onlinetech.com, 2016). The assessment also describes about the nature of application in cloud service. It gives a broad idea about the management of application which is provided through cloud services (deployment models such as IaaS, PaaS and SaaS). Amazon web services are chosen as the service provider. The technology provided through cloud is prone to disaster due to an internet connection. Therefore, in such cases application are made disaster proof by providing them resilience to such disaster. It increases the availability of applications(Zerto.com, 2016). Moreover, features like backup and recovery of the applications are entertained so that the applications can be recovered quickly and the consumers can experience an uninterrupted service. Various techniques of the chosen service provider in the assessment are compared and discussed. The different techniques, which are advanced in the current scenario, help in the quick recovery of applications. There are opportunities in the cloud management where different technologies can be used for better disaster recovery of the applications. Areas like resource management and application recovery need more methods for better management of services. More techniques have to be introduced for better services in cloud computing because still there are opportunities in cloud models which can enhance the quality of service for the consumers (Sherwood, 2015).
